The most visited and populated group of islands. These mountainous islands overlook magnificent crystal clear lagoons. Scuba diving is easy even for beginners and very interesting.
Often in a circle shape, these reef parts are usually pierced by a pass allowing the ocean to get into the lagoon and vice versa in order to avoid stagnant water. Passes are usually famous for incredible dives.
It includes 11 mountainous islands with no barrier reef, ie without a lagoon. These islands are outside of the usual tourist circuit and are still very traditional culture wise. Waters are rich in fish and shellfish. Diving is great with an amazing wild fauna.
Made of a group of 6 islands 600 miles South of Tahiti. The weather is usually cooler than in the other groups of islands with more rain and wind.
From July to October, one may encounter humpback whales swimming from Antarctica to mate or give birth around the islands.
GAMBIER ARCHIPELAGO
800 miles South-East of Tahiti, these islands are said to be incredibly rich in terms of lagoon wildlife. Unfortunately, there is no dive shop throughout this group of islands… However, it also allows this place to remain basically untouched.
